TEXAS BOUNDARY IN 1845
TEXAS BOUNDARY 1850
On August 30, 1836, brothers Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen founded Houston, Texas at the confluence of Buffalo Bayou and White Oak Bayou, a location now known as Allen's Landing. The brothers, from New York, purchased over 6,600 acres of land and named the city after General Sam Houston, a hero of the Texas War for Independence. The Allen brothers lobbied the Republic of Texas Congress to move the state capital to Houston, promising to build a capitol building in exchange. On December 15, 1836, Congress selected Houston as the provisional capital, and President Houston signed the bill. However, Congress moved the capital to Austin two years later.
In the meantime, Houston developed as a regional transportation and commercial hub. In 1837, Houston was incorporated as a city and James S. Holman was elected as the first mayor. The city's municipal government was headquartered at Old Market Square from 1841 to 1939, but the City Hall on Market Square burned down in the 1870s and again in 1901.
